Embark on an unforgettable 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes, where you will experience the breathtaking beauty of Morocco’s landscapes, from the majestic Atlas Mountains to the golden dunes of the Sahara. This journey offers a unique blend of culture, history, and adventure, making it a must-do for travelers eager to explore the heart of Morocco.
Crossing the High Atlas Mountains
Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Marrakech, as we drive through the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m) in the High Atlas Mountains. This scenic route offers panoramic views of the rugged terrain, picturesque Berber villages, and lush valleys.
Our first major stop is at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most famous ksars (fortified villages). This ancient village has served as a backdrop for numerous Hollywood films, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Take a guided tour through the narrow alleys and admire the stunning earthen architecture.
Ouarzazate – The Hollywood of Africa
Just a short drive from Ait Ben Haddou lies Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Hollywood of Africa.” We visit the Atlas Film Studios, where many international blockbusters were filmed, and the Taourirt Kasbah, a historic fortress offering insights into Morocco’s past.
Dades Valley – Land of Thousand Kasbahs
Continuing our journey, we pass through the Valley of Roses, famous for its rose water production, before arriving at Dades Valley. This region, known as the Land of a Thousand Kasbahs, is home to dramatic gorges, lush oases, and traditional Berber villages. We conclude the day with dinner and an overnight stay in a charming riad or hotel in Dades Gorge.
Todra Gorge – A Hiker’s Paradise
After breakfast, we travel to Todra Gorge, a stunning natural wonder with towering cliffs reaching up to 300 meters high. This is a paradise for rock climbers and nature lovers, offering excellent opportunities for exploration and photography.
Journey to the Sahara – Merzouga
Leaving the gorge behind, we drive towards the gateway to the Sahara Desert, Merzouga. Along the way, we pass through Erfoud, known for its fossil production, and the charming town of Rissani, the historical capital of the Tafilalt region.
Camel Trekking and Desert Camp
Upon arrival in Merzouga, we switch to camelback for an enchanting trek across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. As the sun sets, the landscape transforms into a mesmerizing spectacle of colors. We arrive at our luxury desert camp, where we are welcomed with traditional Moroccan mint tea.
The evening is spent under a canopy of stars, enjoying a delicious Moroccan dinner accompanied by Berber music and drumming around the campfire. Overnight in a comfortable desert tent.
Sunrise in the Desert
Wake up early to witness the magnificent sunrise over the dunes, a truly magical experience. After breakfast, we ride camels back to Merzouga village, where we rejoin our vehicle and begin the journey to Fes.
Ziz Valley – A Lush Oasis
En route, we pass through the Ziz Valley, famous for its vast date palm groves and ancient kasbahs. This fertile valley provides a striking contrast to the surrounding arid landscape, making it an ideal spot for a short stop and photography.
Midelt – The Apple Capital
Our next stop is Midelt, a town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains. Known for its apple orchards, Midelt is a great place to enjoy a break and savor some fresh local produce.
Ifrane – The Switzerland of Morocco
As we approach Fes, we pass through Ifrane, often referred to as the Switzerland of Morocco due to its European-style architecture, clean streets, and alpine climate. If time permits, we can stop to see the famous Atlas Lion Statue and enjoy the fresh mountain air.
